What does "bring your own key" mean in the Hobby tier?+
You don't have to pay for features you can power yourself. Get access from OpenAI, Google, Groq, Anthropic, or DeepSeek, enter your key with us — and use Geist almost for free.
I don't like AI writing for me!+
Good, neither do we. Geist helps with style, synonyms, logic checks, translations, or a bit of motivation — meet Geist and see what he does (and doesn't) do. We do not, and never will offer "continue writing" or "finish my book" features. But if that doesn't convince you, there's a setting to 'banish Geist' in your menu — or grab the Purist plan, which ships without so much as a whisper of AI.
Is this any good for non-fiction or academic writing?+
Weeeeeell... kind of. But also not really. If you want to write a biography, true crime or a history book, WriteGeist can be helpful, as you can just use the Grimoire to store real people, places and events. But if you want to write a scientific paper or a technical document, we recommend sticking to LaTeX or Word.
What languages do you support?+
Currently, WriteGeist fully supports English and German. More language support is on the roadmap.
What makes you better than other writing software?+
We never claimed to be better. However, we believe our foundational pillars are well thought out: Major writing software like Papyrus or Scrivener is often bloated and unfocused. They lack a collaborative approach and universal compatibility. Traditional tools like Word, Google Docs, etc., offer the latter, but they are not tailored for authors. There's also Sudowrite or Novelcraft who basically force AI upon you. WriteGeist sits right in the middle. Collaborative, usable from any device, and built by and for authors.
